1706 FULLY DATED 1715 FLEET! COLOMBIA 2E ONLY NGC GRADED! FINEST - NGC 62
The Elusive date of 1706, unknown to most, even advanced collectors. In all likelihood this is due to the Battle of 1708 where the English caught wind of the Spanish desperately trying to evade capture while removing a built up haul since 1700 (The War of the Succession). Approx. 650 conquistadors chose Death over Plunder as the English surrounded them (approx. 50 miles off shore in Colombia) and attempted to get the Spanish to hand over their Galleon filled with Treasure. The Spaniards knowingly gave their lives by firing upon the English War ship, rather than giving the approx. $9 Billion dollar (today's value) Treasure over to the English and sank to approx. 1,000 feet resting on the ocean floor. Recently, there have been photos taken by excavators literally showing a PERU 1705 sticking up from the sands of time (clearly showing the date).
It was thought by most, there were No 1706's from Peru or Colombia; however, there were actually a total of 8 discovered together (I believe in the 1960's) and 4 of those pieces are in the State of FL Collection and 4 are in private hands. This piece offered here is the Finest Known and ONLY one showing in the NGC Pop Report Census. We have seen one other piece that was sold maybe decades ago and have tracked down the other 2 pieces, both from early auctions (1972 Schulman and the Parker-Barnett auction (1960's). All three of these other pieces that are privately held are far inferior to this piece, mainly since the dates are only partials and shifted.
A RARE Opportunity to hold such a Rare piece of History!
