Peru 8 Escudos 1723/2 "One of the Rarest First Reign Lima Issues of Philip IV, Only 2 Double Dates 1723/2 are known!" NGC 61

Mint: Lima, Viceroyalty of Peru
Assayer: M (Felix Cristobal Cano Melgarejo)
Weight 27.01g
Diameter: 33.5mm

This is an exceptional and rare double date Lima onza, struck in the final year of Philip the Fifth's first reign. Calico calls the 1723/2 onza "muy rara" and indeed it is. Only two double dates, both overdates, are known for this issue. This is by far the best of the pair.

Lima gold cob collectors have only recently begun to appreciate how rare high-quality double date Lima onzas are. Many First Reign post-Fleet dates such as 1723 are represented by only one or two coins. Advanced collectors are well advised to concentrate on choice double date issues when and if they become available.
