PERU 1750 4 ESCUDOS MS NGC 63 "SHIPWRECK LA LUZ"

Picture
This piece is from the famous Shipwreck "La Luz" meaning "Our Lady of Light."   VERY RARE, as most 4 escudos are.  This piece has a nice round planchet and a very prevalent date.  The Nuestra Senora de La Luz sank in 1752 off Montevideo Uruguay (after leaving Buenos Aires in the summer of 1752 with a load of money bound for Spain.  A strong storm swept her into the coastline spreading wreckage over a wide area and killing all on board.  Although 90% of her treasure was recovered shortly after she sank the powder-hold was never recovered.  That is, until 1992 when divers starting finding gold coins on a wreck site in the Rio de la Plata!
