PERU 1 ESCUDO 1697 NGC 50 “ONLY 1 KNOWN!” GOLD DOUBLOON “FLEET SHIPWRECK” CHARLES II
This “FLEET SHIPWRECK” Cob dated 1697/6 “Overdate” is clearly seen – both dates! Not only is this piece the “ONLY” 1697, but there are ONLY 3 pieces from the 1600’s in Total! The other two are 1698’s and pale in comparison to this piece. Assayer “Capt. Hurtado,” who retired in 1711. Catalog # KM-27, Cal-176 (var) Full weight of 3.3 grams, has a Very Large Planchet for a 1 Escudo and still contains part of it’s Luster. From the CHARLES II reign, which was only a couple of years, on his death (with no heirs of his own) he decided to leave his throne and kingdom to Philip Vth (his nephew of France), this of course launched the “War of the Succession” from 1700 (late) to 1714/15. This piece carries extreme importance and is the only known surviving piece (certified) that can complete a Set. There’s an 8 Escudo dated 1697 that sold a four years ago for over $93,000!!! This piece sold in March of 2012 (see our Heavy Hitter section on our site). The importance of this piece can not be over stated and certainly destined for World Class Collection!
