Mexico 8 Escudos 1679-94 "Jeweled Cross- 1715 Fleet Shipwreck" 14kt Bezel
1715 FLEET * JEWELED CROSS * 8 ESCUDOS MEXICO 1679-94 PENDANT PIRATE GOLD COINS
EXTREMELY RARE & Highly Coveted ~ 1715 FLEET. * JEWELED CROSS* !!!1
We have only seen (2) two of these in the 8 Escudos Denomination (in 22 years). We do have a couple of 1E's and a 2E Jeweled Cross listed in our ebay store. We will be adding two more 4 Escudos (Jeweled Cross') to our ebay store within the next 10 days as well. But, this is the Only 8 Escudos we've had the pleasure of offering in all that time.
The JEWELED CROSS was the Very First Variety from the very first mint to strike Gold Doubloons (MEXICO). These were struck between 1679 thru 1694, under the reign of CHARLES II !
This particular Gold Doubloon even has the King's Ordinal "C" on the shield side at 1 O'Clock.
This 1715 FLEET coin weighs 26.71gm, with Bezel, total weight approx. 39gm.
In addition this incredible piece has almost a Full Shield, and the Full Denomination (VIII). On the JEWLED CROSS side it displays a FULL CROSS, with 99% of all the JEWELS in the Cross. This is very atypical, as you will see from the others we have listed in our store, most of these elusive gold pieces are missing part of the cross (bars) and almost always missing most of the Jewels in the Cross. Even the Legends above the Cross is displaying "REX," or KING.
All four Fluer de Lis are present as well. There is a tiny hole that was drilled (almost certainly contemporarily) that is under the cross side prong at four o'clock. Set in a brand new bezel (never worn) 14kt GOLD This piece brings a whole new meaning to the term, "TROPHY COIN!"
