INDIA 1100-1327 PAGODA GOLD PCGS MS 62 “GANGAS of TALAKAD” “ELEPHANT PAGODA” RARE Grade! This beautiful Gold Pagoda displaying a majestic Elephant wearing Pelleted Jewelry and the reverse featuring an ornamental floral scroll. FR 288 R. Diameter 15mm, weighs 3.9gm. VERY RARELY are these coins even in seen in MINT STATE condition! The Western Gangas Elephant (Gajapati) Pagoda circulated in Lanka as is evidenced by a discovery in 1922 at Allaippiddi in the Jaffna district. Mitchiner (author) is of the opinion that a few of these coins were found over a wide area of southern Karnataka, and was introduced by the Western Gangas and continued by the Hoysalas. Some of the Pagodas have one or two varying Kannada characters above the elephant, others have symbols including DAGGER or CONCH, while most have nothing visible above the elephant..
