COLOMBIA 2 ESCUDOS 1667 NGC 61 GOLD COB DOUBLOON SHIPWRECK 1681 FLEET Portobelo
COLOMBIA 2 ESCUDOS 1667 NGC 61 MS! GOLD COB DOUBLOON 1681 FLEET PORTOBELO SHIPWRECK (6.7 grams) KM-14.1 This gorgeous Gold 2 Escudos is in a very high grade (MS-61), and rarely seen with such a high degree of original Luster, especially at 350 YEARS old! Nearly a complete shield and a Full Cross, also atypical for this issue. To the left of the cross I can clearly see the bottom half of the date. Also, clearly seen, especially in the devices of the shield are encrustation remnants, almost certainly confirming it’s shipwreck pedigree. The 1681 Fleet left Spain on January 28th, 1681 and arrived in Cartagena Colombia on April 2nd. From there, a small Armada of 12 ships were sent out to determine the dangers of PIRATES, as this was the age of Henry Morgan and Privateers.
