Spain — 8 Escudos Philip V | 1701 | First-Year Issue of the Bourbon Dynasty Seville Mint | 8 Escudos | King Philip V NGC AU Details | “VIII” Dot at Fleece | Flower After V Reverse Spot Removed
An extraordinary first-year issue of Philip V, this magnificent Spanish 8 Escudos represents the dawn of a new royal dynasty and one of the most dramatic transitions in European history. Struck in 1701—the very first year of Philip V’s reign—this massive hand-struck gold cob marks the beginning of Bourbon rule in Spain following the death of Charles II, the last Habsburg king. The succession would ignite the legendary War of the Spanish Succession, a global conflict fought across Europe and the Americas over control of the Spanish Empire itself.
The obverse displays a bold and beautifully detailed crowned Habsburg-Bourbon shield, remarkably complete for the type. The central arms remain sharply defined, with strong castles, lions, and Bourbon-Anjou fleurs-de-lis still visible within the intricate heraldic design. Particularly desirable is the full and elegant crown above the shield, a feature often weak or incomplete on these crudely struck treasure issues. Surrounding legends remain impressively bold, with “PHILIPPVS V” clearly legible along the periphery.
Equally captivating is the reverse, featuring the iconic Jerusalem cross with quatrefoils—a design synonymous with the golden age of Spanish treasure coinage. The cross is exceptionally centered and well struck, framed by a complete inner border and strong outer legends. Hand-struck cob coinage was produced rapidly using irregularly cut planchets, making examples with this level of symmetry and definition highly sought after among advanced collectors.
This specimen also carries several important attribution features noted directly on the holder, including the coveted “VIII” denomination marker, the dot-at-fleece variety, and the flower after the “V” in the king’s name—small but significant characteristics avidly studied by specialists in Spanish colonial and treasure coinage.
Though designated “AU Details” due to a removed reverse spot, the coin retains outstanding eye appeal with vibrant golden surfaces and impressive sharpness throughout both sides. In hand, the piece radiates the unmistakable aura of early 18th-century Spanish imperial gold—treasure literally struck during the height of Spain’s transatlantic power.
Large gold cobs of Philip V have long captivated collectors for their combination of raw pirate-era romance, historical importance, and unmistakable individuality. No two are exactly alike. Each was struck by hand over 320 years ago, intended not as a collectible, but as circulating wealth destined for fleets, empires, merchants, and kings.
A spectacular and deeply historic first-year 8 Escudos—boldly struck, visually commanding, and embodying the final great era of Spanish treasure gold.
