Trust & Verification
Authentication & Value Determinants
Value for escudos and world gold coins comes from much more than a grade. Multiple factors affect the value and desirability of a coin.
Luster
The natural shine and reflectivity of the coin's surface. Original luster significantly increases value.
Strike
How well-defined the design details are. A strong, full strike is highly desirable.
Toning
Natural color changes over centuries. Attractive, original toning can add significant premium.
Crosses
On Spanish colonial coins, the visibility and completeness of the cross design is critical.
Legends
The inscriptions around the coin's border. Full, readable legends are rare and valuable.
Date
Visible dates are extremely important for shipwreck coins and dramatically increase value.
Centering
How well-centered the design is on the planchet. Well-centered examples command premium prices.
Rarity
Fewer surviving examples means higher value. Some dates and mint marks are exceptionally rare.
Fields
The flat areas of the coin. Clean, smooth fields free of damage are highly desirable.
Encrustations
Marine deposits from shipwreck recovery. Some collectors prize attractive encrustations as proof of provenance.
Cracks & Filing
Pre-striking planchet preparation marks. Understanding these helps distinguish original characteristics from damage.
Planchet
The blank metal disc before striking. Planchet quality affects the final appearance of the coin.
