Roman Imperatorial "Julius Caesar" 44BC Denarius NGC F

Roman Imperatorial — Julius Caesar AR Denarius 44 BC | 3.45 g | NGC F (Strike 4/5, Surface 2/5 – graffiti) Moneyer: L. Aemilius Buca “First of the Twelve Caesars”

Struck in 44 BC, the final and most dramatic year of Caesar’s life, this silver denarius belongs to the historic series issued just before the Ides of March. These coins mark a turning point in Roman history — the moment when a living Roman statesman placed his own portrait on the Republic’s coinage.

The obverse presents a right-facing, laureate portrait of Caesar, individualized and unmistakably human. The aging features, elongated neck, and receding hairline are rendered with striking realism — a powerful political statement in a society that had long resisted monarchical imagery. The surrounding legend proclaims his titles, reinforcing the unprecedented authority he had consolidated.

Struck by the moneyer L. Aemilius Buca, this issue is among the last coin types produced before Caesar’s assassination on March 15, 44 BC. Within weeks of these denarii entering circulation, the Roman world would be plunged into chaos, ultimately giving rise to the Roman Empire.

Graded Fine by NGC Ancients, with a strong 4/5 strike, the portrait remains bold and well-centered, retaining clear facial detail and legible legends. The 2/5 surface designation (graffiti) reflects an ancient mark added long after striking — itself a reminder that these coins actively circulated in antiquity. Far from diminishing the historical character, such marks can underscore the piece’s long and authentic life in the ancient world.

At 3.45 grams, this denarius carries immense historical weight. It is not merely a silver coin, but a contemporary artifact from one of history’s most consequential figures. As the first of the “Twelve Caesars” and the catalyst for Rome’s transformation from Republic to Empire, Julius Caesar’s portrait issues remain among the most iconic and sought-after coins of the ancient world.10

A tangible relic from the final days of the Roman Republic — struck for a dictator, spent in a Republic on the brink, and preserved for over two millennia.
