Julius Caesar’s Final Consulship and the Legacy of the Gold Aureus ~ YOUNG VESTA! ROMAN REPUBLIC — AUREUS OF JULIUS CAESAR, STRUCK c. 46 BC NGC XF (5/3), Choice Straight Grade
This very rare variety (Young Vesta as Caesar), which we've only seen approx. 4 to 6 pieces for many years is a powerful and historically charged gold aureus issued during the lifetime of Gaius Julius Caesar, struck in Rome circa 46 BC under the authority of his loyal supporter and mintmaster Aulus Hirtius—a man who would later die at Mutina defending the Republic. This intensely significant coin was produced at the height of Caesar’s dominance, while serving as Consul for the third time, as he reshaped Roman politics, rewrote the power structure of the Republic, and set the stage for the Empire that would follow.
The obverse carries the inscription C CAESAR COS TER, framing the serene, veiled portrait of Vesta (or Pietas), an image symbolizing sacred duty, lineage, and the ancient religious legitimacy that Caesar so carefully invoked. The artistry is unmistakably late-Republican: elegant, restrained, and deeply purposeful.
The reverse bears the name A HIRTIVS PR, celebrating the influential Aulus Hirtius, here shown with a trio of priestly symbols — the lituus, jug, and securis — representing the sacred rites of Rome and emphasizing Caesar’s authority not only as statesman and general but as guardian of Rome’s ancestral traditions. These symbols are the visual language of Republican power, connecting Caesar’s political supremacy to Rome’s religious foundations.
Struck in fine gold and weighing 8.05 grams, this aureus presents with excellent detail for the issue, showcasing strong devices and classic fabric from the Rome mint. Catalogued in the major references (Crawford cf. 466/1; Sydenham cf. 1017 ff.; Calicó cf. 37), it is widely recognized as one of the most historically meaningful Republican aurei — a coin issued by Caesar’s own administration, during his lifetime, under a trusted ally who would shape and record key events of the era.
A remarkable survivor from one of history’s most tumultuous turning points, this aureus embodies the final years of the Roman Republic and the rise of its most legendary figure. A museum-caliber piece of political propaganda, personal loyalty, and absolute power—struck in gold at the feet of Julius Caesar himself.bg
