SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS (A.D. 193–211). AV Aureus (7.26 g), Rome Mint, A.D. 209. NGC EF, Strike: 5/5, Surface: 1/5
RIC 255; Calicó 2435

This exceptional dynastic aureus captures a defining moment in the Severan dynasty: Septimius Severus, the African-born emperor who rose from relative obscurity to found one of Rome’s most enduring imperial houses, proudly presents his heirs to the empire. The obverse features a commanding laureate portrait of Severus, his visage projecting the calculated authority of a ruler who had transformed civil war victory into a stable imperial regime. On the reverse, his sons Caracalla and Geta—both laureate and clad in the toga of Roman statesmanship—stand united, holding a small figure of Victory between them. The type trumpets harmony and succession, though history would expose its irony, for the brothers’ rivalry would culminate in fratricide and erasure, with Geta murdered by Caracalla in 211.

Severus’s reign was marked by military expansion, judicial reform, and the strengthening of imperial authority. Born in Leptis Magna in modern Libya, he was the first emperor of North African origin, bringing a cosmopolitan vigor to the Roman throne. His consolidation of power after the “Year of the Five Emperors” in 193 A.D. and subsequent campaigns in Parthia and Britain reshaped Rome’s frontiers. This aureus, struck in the final years of his reign during his northern campaigns, reflects both his ambition to secure dynastic continuity and his acute awareness of Rome’s need for strong leadership at a time of internal and external pressures.

Charmingly struck on a broad, round flan, the coin displays a portrait of remarkable presence, embodying the emperor’s mix of stern authority and statesmanlike dignity. While minor smoothing is present in the fields, as noted, its glowing surfaces and artistic clarity render the coin’s eye appeal far superior to the assigned technical surface grade. A superb example of Severan dynastic propaganda—simultaneously a declaration of unity and a foreshadowing of imperial tragedy.
