ROMAN EMPIRE. Nero, A.D. 54–68. AV Aureus (7.08g). Rome Mint. SALVS Reverse. NGC Ch F, Strike 5/5 — RIC 59

A compelling certified Roman gold aureus of Nero, emperor from A.D. 54–68, struck at the Rome mint and weighing 7.08 grams. Nero remains one of the most famous—and controversial—figures of the ancient world, making his gold coinage perennially desirable among collectors of Roman imperial issues, the Julio-Claudian dynasty, and the Twelve Caesars. This piece is encapsulated by NGC Ancients as Choice Fine, with a strong 5/5 strike designation and 2/5 surface rating; the label notes edge marks and brushing.

The obverse bears a laureate portrait of Nero facing right, surrounded by the imperial legend NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS. Despite its circulated grade, the portrait retains an immediately recognizable imperial character, with a well-defined laurel wreath, facial profile, and boldly rendered lettering. Gold aurei were the premier denomination of the Roman monetary system and were struck in comparatively limited quantities for major payments, elite circulation, state expenditure, and military-related transactions.

On the reverse, the personification of Salus—the Roman goddess of health, welfare, security, and preservation—is seated left on a throne and holds a patera, a shallow ceremonial libation bowl. The simple but dignified SALVS inscription identifies the figure and reinforces the political message behind the coin: the prosperity and safety of the Roman people were linked to the emperor and his rule. The reverse remains clearly identifiable, including the seated figure, throne, and remaining legend.

This handsome issue belongs to one of the classic Nero aureus types, generally attributed to the mid-60s A.D. and catalogued as RIC I 59 for the laureate Nero / Salus seated-left combination. The type is an enduring favorite because it combines a historic imperial portrait with an attractive reverse personification, all in the prestige format of Roman gold. Its 7.08-gram weight is consistent with the Neronic aureus standard prior to the later reduction in the gold denomination.

An appealing ancient-gold offering with excellent visual impact, strong central devices, and the confidence of NGC Ancients certification. Suitable as a meaningful addition to a Roman imperial gold collection, a Nero portrait set, a Julio-Claudian cabinet, or a broader collection focused on the political imagery and artistry of the early Roman Empire.
