Mexico 4 Reales 1598-21 "Atocha 1622 Shipwreck" Grade 3

SPANISH COLONIAL — Nuestra Señora de Atocha Shipwreck Silver Cob Philip III, 4 Reales Potosí Mint, circa early 17th century Recovered from the 1622 Atocha Shipwreck Mel Fisher’s Treasures, LLC — Certificate of Authenticity Grade: Three (3) Weight: 8.7 grams Double-struck on reverse

This authentic Spanish silver cob was recovered from the legendary Nuestra Señora de Atocha, the most famous treasure shipwreck ever discovered. Struck at the Potosí Mint under King Philip III of Spain, this 4 reales coin was part of the immense royal treasure lost when the Atocha sank during a catastrophic hurricane off the Florida Keys on September 6, 1622.

The Atocha was a heavily armed galleon of Spain’s Tierra Firme Fleet, carrying tons of silver, gold, emeralds, and royal cargo from the New World back to Spain. More than 260 lives were lost, and the ship vanished beneath the sea—its riches untouched for over three and a half centuries. Despite repeated attempts, the wreck remained undiscovered until Mel Fisher’s historic recovery in 1985, ending one of the longest and most famous treasure hunts in history.

This coin displays all the hallmarks of true shipwreck cob coinage. Struck from hand-cut blanks and hammered between crude dies, it features irregular edges, uneven surfaces, and organic character impossible to replicate. The reverse shows evidence of double striking, a dramatic reminder of the hurried minting conditions in colonial Potosí, where speed mattered more than precision. The legends and devices remain partially visible, preserved despite centuries beneath the sea.

Importantly, this piece is accompanied by its original Mel Fisher’s Treasures Certificate of Authenticity, documenting its recovery from the Atocha wreck site and its legal award through the United States Admiralty Court system. Few shipwreck coins carry documentation of this caliber, directly linking the artifact to one of the most celebrated archaeological recoveries of the 20th century.

Coins like this were never meant to survive. They were struck to finance empire, lost in catastrophe, and buried by time. That this example resurfaced—after 363 years underwater—and remains preserved with full provenance elevates it far beyond a simple silver coin.

This is not just Spanish silver. It is Atocha silver—a tangible survivor of empire, disaster, and discovery, recovered from the ocean floor and forever tied to the greatest treasure shipwreck ever found.1
