Bolivia 8 Reales 1618-21 "Partial Date- Atocha 1622 Shipwreck" Grade 2

BOLIVIA – PARTIALLY DATED “ATOCHA SHIPWRECK” PIECE OF EIGHT (8 REALES) Mint of Potosí, c.1618–1621 | Grade 2 | 19.55 grams

A spectacular survivor of Spain’s maritime empire, this Bolivia 8 Reales “Piece of Eight” was recovered from the legendary 1622 Nuestra Señora de Atocha, the most famous treasure galleon ever discovered. Struck at the Potosí Mint in the high Andes—source of the richest silver vein in history—this coin represents both the wealth and the peril of Spain’s colonial expansion.

This partially dated 8 Reales displays the bold Habsburg shield of Castile and León, with castles and lions still beautifully visible despite over three centuries beneath the sea. The irregular “cob” shape is characteristic of hand-struck Spanish colonial coinage, each piece unique—hammered swiftly in the mint to meet the voracious demands of the Crown’s New World trade.

The Atocha, flagship of the Tierra Firme fleet, sank off the Florida Keys in a hurricane of 1622 while heavily laden with New World treasure bound for Spain—hundreds of silver bars, chests of coins, emeralds, and gold ingots. Her discovery in 1985 by legendary treasure hunter Mel Fisher was hailed as one of the greatest underwater finds of all time, revealing the immense wealth of Spain’s Golden Age and the perilous routes of transatlantic trade.

This specimen, classified as Grade 2, retains outstanding definition on the castles and lions with deep, genuine sea-salvage patina—an unmistakable mark of authenticity from its centuries-long slumber in the Caribbean depths. Part of a small surviving fraction of the Atocha’s manifest, each coin is a tangible fragment of maritime legend.

A magnificent artifact of empire, shipwreck, and discovery—an authentic piece of the Atocha’s fabled treasure, minted at the roof of the world and lost to the depths for over 350 years.
